Rita: welcome back to the onyx family podcast and today we’re talking fashion and guys the year’s biggest fashion night just happened met gala what y’all think
Sinead: oh
Shasha: some interesting interesting choices in the fashion
Mirthell: so hold on so is that what gala is about is it about fashion only or or do they just come with fashion
Rita: yeah you know what i don’t even know
Sinead: i actually don’t know what is the message
Mirthell: is it a fashion show
Shalom: no i think it’s run by anna wintour and she’s the editor of Vogue and what she does is every year she invites everyone to the met gala and it costs like thousand dollars i think like thirty thousand
Rita: thirty thousand dollars
Shasha: formally called the costume institute gala so it’s basically a costume party
Sinead: right basically i didn’t know that
Mirthell: i didn’t know that
Shalom: but here’s the thing the reason why it’s so expensive is that those expenses are paying for the arts that are in
Rita: new york?
Shalom: in new york yes
Rita: oh okay well so thirty thousand dollars per seat and two hundred and fifty thousand dollars if you buy a table
Sinead: What?
Shasha: oh yeah we can get in there for free if you’re invited or you should have to pay
Rita: no like let’s say I think if you buy the table then you can invite whoever you want to your table
Sinead: ah okay okay
Shalom: but don’t like certain like industries like buying it for you and then like they invite you and them, you know you get to say
Rita: well I know for like youtube bought a table and then they invited certain creators
Sinead: the same thing yeah
Mirthell: I mean everybody was there I saw people in sports there a lot of people in sports, there I saw people you know on youtube
Rita: yeah I don’t know
Mirthell: this youtube is new though right? Because they never had YouTubers there before
Rita: yeah they did
Mirthell: they did?
Rita: yeah okay lily’s been there Eliza’s been there like yeah
Sinead: yeah
Mirthell: Okay I got you.
Rita: yeah but you know I mean this is controversial maybe to say but I just think and maybe I’m wrong that not all celebrities have to really pay that some people they just come like come on because you know we need the publicity so just come on because I don’t know who it is that’s paying but I feel like if you’re paying either you’re a not that big maybe orb you’re a company and they’re like you better pay but I feel like there are certain people so if I have to pay like if we’re invited and we have to pay I already know my status you know what I’m saying I already know
Sinead: that is so true
Rita: you know
Shasha: no they’re not making Rihanna or Kim Kardashian pay
Rita: that’s what I say
Shasha: I don’t think so
Rita: by the way speaking of Kim Kardashian did you guys know that the guy in the hoodie was not Kanye
Mirthell: are you serious?
Sinead: what?
Mirthell: it looks like Kanye
Rita: it was a guy who impersonates Kanye
Mirthell: So hold on so why did they do this oh so that’s probably the reason why they covered their faces so that people would not know that it’s not Kanye.
Rita: right right
Shasha: Was it actually Kim?
Rita: you know well wait was it was definitely Kim yeah that one is for sure
Mirthell: so, what Kanye didn’t want to go why like what
Sinead: aren’t they still divorcing
Mirthell: yeah but she’s doing stuff on his videos and his music and everything
Sinead: I don’t know, it’s a touchy situation I don’t know
Shasha: it’s crazy
Shalom: that is crazy I have a question the Met gala has been on for years do you think that the age of social media just made people more\ aware of the met gala and people are like oh now I can like peak people’s interest do you think that you know because
Sinead: Do you think it’s gotten more popular with social media?
Shalom: yes
Sinead: maybe
Mirthell: I think this year a lot of people seem to be
Shalom: no this past couple of years yeah
Mirthell: really?
Sinead: Well, were you guys interested in the Met gala when you guys were younger?
Shalom: what
Mirthell: no not at all
Rita: never never
Mirthell: I’m not even interested right now
Shiloh: I never heard of it until this week
Sinead: what?
Shiloh: I’m serious
Shalom: I feel like my first time hearing about the met gala and actually piquing my interest was 2018’s my gala and let me tell you the fashion in 2018 was superb
Sinead: wait what was the theme of that one was that the one where it was not medieval but you know what I’m talking about?
Rita: No, religious?
Shalom: yeah religious
Rita: yeah that one was they went all out on that one like I remember Chadwick Boseman Rihanna looked like a pope you know
Shalom: yes they were Zendaya looked like a knight Ariana grande and her dress oh my goodness
Shasha: Wait, so you’re telling me that each year there’s a theme?
Rita: there’s a theme and this year’s theme was Americana so I don’t know if covid has people just off or just people just really happy to just get out of the house because it just seemed like a mishmash
Mirthell: I don’t think they’re following the theme, yeah.
Rita: it really should be renamed mishmash people were like for example JLo she knew the assignment she came in like a western-themed outfit
Sinead: wait, I need to see JLo’s outfit
Mirthell: I didn’t see that
Shasha: JLo was actually wearing a cowboy hat with stilettos and a long dress
Rita: yeah see to me that is Americana I still think now a lot of people said they didn’t really like Ciara’s outfit that much because it was football-themed but I feel like again she understood the assignment
Sinead: but also um who else?
Mirthell: oh that was cool how she gets paid how much to her husband and everything i really like their relationship and how they do things
Sinead: Rihanna even though people didn’t like
Shalom: no Shiloh was saying how he was looking at Billy Eilish and saying is that Americana
Shasha: no that was a ball gown
Rita: yeah but she was channeling Marilyn Monroe
Shiloh: yeah yeah that’s what I figured
Shasha: Sorry, Is Americana cowboys, what is Americana?
Shalom: anything with American
Mirthell: anything that has to do with American
Sinead: yeah American history
Rita: America’s culture.
Mirthell: football is very American
Sinead: yeah and the cowboy scene yeah and also Rihanna, Rihanna a lot of mixed reviews over Rihanna’s outfit because she said she was trying to show off the black hoodie and how like a lot of black people especially they would wear their hoodies and how it was like
Rita: yeah it looked very new york like the 90s
Mirthell: so then again like what was Kanye and
Rita: Now, I’ve done told you it was a mishmash, let me tell you
Sinead: right yeah there’s the people who slew it and then the people who kind of
Rita: now we can theorize that she was representing the invisible of American society
Mirthell: or our black lives matter?
Rita: Yeah, no
Sinead: maybe
Mirthell: black shadows meadow because she looks like a shadow
Rita: she looks like a shadow she looks like okay remember in ghost remember the black demons
Mirthell: yeah yeah
Rita: that’s and not someone else said she looked like something else in some other horror game
Shasha: Horror game?
Rita: I can’t remember what it was yeah what was it I don’t know but they were saying that it just looked I can’t remember what it was but basically everyone was like what is that?
Shasha: You know I see a lot of people who came. You know they did understand the assignment but some people just went there and were like you know what remix I’m gonna wear what I want like lets, for instance, Lil Nas he wore a robot suit is that Americana?
Mirthell: well he took it off and then ended up with something underneath it like
Shasha: No, a robot it’s a shiny robot suit
Mirthell: no no no that wasn’t the robot he had three outfits he started off with a big robe
Sinead: yeah
Mirthell: and then underneath the robe was the robot outfit and then underneath the robot, the outfit was like this glitter outfit
Sinead: I just wanna say that I don’t think that was a robot outfit it looked more like an oh wait
Shasha: it is it’s a robot
Mirthell: you look like that guy he looks like that guy off of uh star wars what’s that robot old robot
Shiloh: Little Nas looks a lot like C3PO
Shasha: C3PO
Mirthell: yes yes yes yes so that was American that’s American
Sinead: is that what he was going for?
Rita: I don’t know
Mirthell: wait is star wars American
Sinead: yeah
Mirthell: okay
Sinead: if that’s what he wanted to do
Rita: wait, I was trying to see what they said she looked like but
Shasha: so I see someone named Kim Petras she wore a dress and is a deer at the front of a horse so that’s really Americana because it’s a horse you know what I’m saying
Mirthell: so she’s a western horse
Rita: I just don’t feel like that’s Americana though I just feel like that was just weird
Shasha: oh
Rita: I don’t know that’s just my opinion but what I don’t know
Shasha: what a very vague style they chose this year
Shalom: yeah it’s very vague they do realize there’s gonna be, they’re gonna have next year they announce that they’re gonna have Americana part two.
Sinead: why because people can’t understand the assignment
Shalom: exactly
Rita: oh my goodness, try again
Sinead: yeah watch them mess it up again next year
Mirthell: no just move on move on to something else
Rita: I know okay now Travis Scott
Sinead: What did Travis Scott wear?
Rita: this quilt right? that’s him right?
Sinead: oh
Shasha: ASAP Rocky
Sinead: ASAP Rocky yeah I was like Travis Scott?
Rita: You’re young these days, I don’t know.
Mirthell: I can’t keep up with you guys. Celebrities
Rita: Honestly, I would’ve just said I don’t know, Fetty wap, Travis Scot, wait who did you say this was again?
Sinead: ASAP Rocky
Rita: honestly you know what’s funny the name is right there asap rocky and I still made up my own.
Sinead: so Shiloh what did you think of asap rocky’s outfit?
Shiloh: Captain Crunch
Sinead: he’s not even wrong, look.
Rita: but again, he understood the assignment
Mirthell: okay so that’s the assignment then right
Rita: no but this is not captain crunch this is quilting this is something that they would do on the frontier
Sinead: oh
Rita: you know this is again understanding the assignment I mean it’s whack
Sinead: it’s whack because all he did was, coming out to quilt then did you see how he threw it off like there was gonna be something amazing underneath he was wearing a suit.
Mirthell: oh man
Shalom: I feel like my favorite outfit of the night was Yara Shahidi’s
Sinead: Yara Shahidi’s
Mirthell: really? can I see it?
Shalom: yeah this is hers
Mirthell: oh that’s very elegant I feel like that’s the
Shasha: so, what was Shahidi’s wearing?
Mirthell: based on what everybody else is wearing
Rita: well I mean, I don’t feel like it’s understanding the assignment
Shasha: so Yara Shahidi is wearing a sleeveless you know tight suit dress it’s beige colored and she has a veil a thin veil behind her like she’s getting married I think it’s very you know very nice and
Sinead: no does this look like a 20s outfit or like
Shalom: it does.
Rita: let me see
Sinead: yeah look, look at the outfits
Rita: Well no, that wouldn’t be the 20s that would be more 30s
Sinead: yeah
Shasha: with the gloves, and soft curls
Rita: yeah you know what now oh yes even the hairstyles yes, now she did understand the assignment.
Mirthell: and it was elegant it wasn’t like weird
Rita: It was very Hollywood 30s glamour
Shalom: yeah
Shasha: she has if you guys don’t see the pictures she has really soft curls that you would see like on with the wind and she has a necklace.
Rita: yeah she looks good
Sinead: another person I think kind of understood that assignment was Halle Bailey because she was in like a flapper kind of like the suit you know what I mean
Rita: right wasn’t that like a leotard?
Sinead: yeah it was still like American you know what I mean
Shalom: yeah I feel like it would’ve fit the feast if she had like some sort of headband
Rita: yeah she had the headband maybe
Shalom: yeah
Sinead: oh the headband with a feather?
Rita: yeah like that
Shiloh: Kim Kardashian’s thing is very unoriginal hear me out Shasha we had like a ton of the same things she wore um
Sinead: black morph suits?
Shiloh: yeah yeah and she just layered it over a black dress
Mirthell: isn’t that when we were doing the clue master?
Rita: oh yeah
Mirthell: yeah we’re doing clue master
Shiloh: exactly
Mirthell: she basically was a clue master of the show
Shalom: I want all y’all to see Timothee Chalamet outfit
Sinead: okay what was Timothee Chalamet’s outfit?
Rita: What was that?
Mirthell: that’s like uh back to the future type that was the style of the 80s where you had like parachute pants and stuff like that.
Shalom: yeah but look at the shoes it’s converse
Rita: oh we’ll see that’s Americana
Sinead: okay i guess
Mirthell: yes, moon shoes and
Shasha: so there’s this Iman, Iman wore like a Mardi gras kind of dress with like a huge headpiece
Rita: she looks so beautiful
Shasha: Is that Americana?
Mirthell: Can I see it?
Shasha: it’s like a huge headpiece like Mardi gras
Mirthell: oh i like that
Shasha: hoop dress
Rita: I don’t know I think to feel like for me I wouldn’t necessarily say oh yeah i think for me if i can’t readily identify it you know i don’t know if it’s i don’t know if i would say oh yeah that was definitely understanding the assignment but you know maybe it was she was doing something like someone would wear for mardi gras
Mirthell: so how about AOC when she had that whole like tax the rich was that?
Shasha: That was freestyling that wasn’t Americana
Mirthell: is it aoc?
Rita: AOC yeah
Shasha: that’s freestyling
Mirthell: really? I mean taxes are very American like over taxes
Shasha: Americana is an era of time though
Sinead: no because Ciara wore the football and that’s not an era of time
Rita: Americana is just our culture
Sinead: anything in a culture that’s American
Rita: I would say that her thing I think the controversy with her though and I think it’s valid like you’re saying tax the rich as you’re partying with the rich like she says okay there’s always a number of tickets that go to public government workers
Mirthell: right
Rita: and she just took one of those um or she received it you know and then she took the offer up but I just feel still it muddles the message if you’re going to say tax the rich in your gown at the Gala
Mirthell: That’s like 30,000
Sinead: say there’s a huge buffet or whatever like feed the hungry
Rita: yeah exactly
Sinead: they’re going to a buffet and they’re eating all they want and then they said to feed the hungry
Shasha: yeah or you go to a farm and you say go vegan
Rita: exactly exactly
Mirthell: and she’s not like protesting she’s like fully eating she’s fully in the whole program you know like that would be like
Rita: okay so some people say oh well she had to go over there to bring the message to the people
Mirthell: but you’re not like you’re fully in it you’re enjoying it you’re taking pictures she’s doing everything that they are doing it would be different if she was actually protesting where it’s like I’m not going to eat I’m not going to take pictures
Rita: right
Shasha: so AOC is not the only one who tries to do an activist statement there too Caroline b Maloney also wore a dress that said equal rights for women it didn’t look Americana but and also
Shalom: why are you kidding me women have to fight for our rights forever in this country
Shasha: but Americana that’s not really it’s still again it’s another activist moment
Shalom: excuse me, the women’s rights movement?
Shasha: oh that’s not Americana
Shiloh: that’s a lot of rights in every single country
Sinead: no that’s not that’s all I was going to say that’s not strictly American equal rights are fighting for women all over
Shiloh: will women be free in every single country besides America?
Rita: but I don’t think that outfit maybe it does I don’t know
Shasha: if you guys don’t see the outfit she’s wearing a bunch of banners around so it’s like a flowy band
Rita: yeah
Shasha: it looks like it’s really not for the theme so I know a lot of people came there to you know do activist moments but I feel like if you go to my gala just I feel like you should wear an outfit that you want to wear.
Rita: oh what was going on with Simone Bile’s outfit what was that
Sinead: I don’t know first of all I know she has to be strong to wear that because it’s a bunch of diamonds and crystals like
Mirthell: she’s literally like a muscle woman
Sinead: I know but like just imagine walking around without that many pounds of jewelry
Mirthell: you know what do you know what that outfit reminds me of remember when we used to play that game we used to play this game where we used to fight the fighting game and everybody looked weird and I always used to uh get the guy that would be like this
Rita: street fighter
Sinead: street fighter
Mirthell: no it wasn’t a street fighter
Sinead: was it mortal kombat?
Rita: Mortal Kombat
Mirthell: It might’ve been Tekken or the guy where I always had the guy with the help
no, it was like a demon-type person that had big hits.
Rita: yeah that was like star street fighter
Mirthell: what was the guy?
Shiloh: was he green?
Sinead: oh i can’t remember the name
Rita: It starts with a Z, it was a green guy
Shiloh: Blanca?
Mirthell: no not Blanca
Rita: right
Mirthell: no no no
Shalom: daddy this is the one that says, Blanca
Mirthell: no no no it’s not a street fighter
Rita: it’s a black guy that no but I know what you’re talking about I know he stretches his arms
Mirthell: no this is not the street fighter is the one that me and you were obsessed with
Rita: the soul Calibur
Mirthell: soul Calibur and this is the guy that used to walk like this we need to know his name that outfit she basically is that person
Shalom: well I think someone who really nailed the theme is Barbie Ferreira she’s from euphoria and I just love her outfit
Shasha: okay so I’m one fun fact about the Simone belle’s outfit says it weighed 88
pounds and she had to have a team of
people carrying the train because it was
that heavy one
Rita: okay hon, you’re talking about Valdo
Mirthell: Valdo she was going as Valdo I knew it I knew it
Shasha: It’s crazy it weighs 88 pounds because she’s small herself
Rita: and like it weighed as much as her
Shasha: yeah it’s like that’s like someone like a whole person that’s crazy it looks heavy which look what were you talking about again
Sinead: Barbie Ferreira
Shalom: yeah I love her outfit it just screams the 1920s
Shasha: what does she wear
Shalom: ah she wore this I don’t even know how to describe it but it just screamed like 1930s 1920s when i first saw it this is what this is the outfit
Sinead: oh yeah yeah
Rita: oh yeah that’s nice
Shasha: that’s a pearl dress guys
Rita: Yeah that’s nice it reminds me of you
Shasha: yes it looks like a flapper’s outfit
Rita: but sort of because a real flapper outfit does not emphasize the breasts or the hips it’s just straight like a boy’s outfit
Sinead: oh really i didn’t know that
Mirthell: for me, she can’t help it as her body
Rita: no but they don’t even have that style it wasn’t low cut everything was high cut so or actually even if it was low everything was straight there was no waste
Shasha: how come they made it like that
Rita: I don’t know I really don’t know it was just the style what about frank ocean though and he’s like a little gremlin baby
Sinead: what?
Shasha: you know I was very scared of that at first when I saw that
Rita: like what was that all about
Sinead: yo i did not even see that
Rita: no the little baby
Shiloh: you’re calling me a gremlin
Rita: well what is it well okay then it’s a good one all right
Shasha: and also that is hair green
Sinead: that is interesting
Rita: what is Americana about that?
Sinead: Maybe aliens is that American? is aliens American?
Rita: it just doesn’t make any sense to me you know
Shalom: Did you see Whoopi Goldberg gold words dress?
Mirthell: oh she was there too let me see
Rita: her style is I don’t know what her style is
Mirthell: I feel like Goldberg was like that’s how she dresses every day she every day she’s at the met gala
Rita: yeah Whoopi Goldberg’s outfit was just I don’t know I don’t know sometimes I feel like her
stylist dresses her in things that well does this fit okay here honestly and she’s not even like it’s like she has a body that she could wear like a lot of different things I mean if that’s her style and if she, you know it’s no offense to her but I just don’t understand what her stylists are doing right you know okay
Shasha: wait what was she wearing
Sinead: she was wearing a purple dress that looks like curt not curtains, oh you know it reminds me of cupcake wrappers think of cupcake wrappers upside down
Mirthell and Rita: oh wow oh wow
Shalom: okay I have to say the best one of the night and everyone was talking about this on Twitter this woman is named Anok Yai and she’s
Sinead: wait, how do you pronounce it though?
Shalom: I think it’s Anok Yai
Sinead: Is it Anok Yai?
Shalom: I think so she went viral a couple of years ago on Coachella and
Mirthell: she has a beautiful skin
Shalom: yeah she went
Rita: she’s beautiful
Shalom: yeah she went viral a couple of years ago
Shasha: wait what did she wear?
Shalom: in Coachella and it was just like this one still, photo and it was just gorgeous just showing off her skin and just like you know
Sinead: okay but what is she wearing at the met gala? so Anok Yai looks like she was wearing a black dress has some sheer parts to it some crystal embellishments around up to the bust’s like a v cut and she had like a for not fur I think it’s like faux fur kind of like style you know how you throw it around you shrug
Shasha: shrug
Sinead: yeah Yeah
Rita: yeah I mean it’s nice um it was beautiful I still don’t know as I like to see something and say yes they understood the assignment
Sinead: yeah
Rita: that’s what makes it interesting you want to just wear a nice beautiful gown and go to an awards show, I don’t know I don’t
Shasha: I think the best dress was JLo because she understood the assignment
Rita: and I do have to say that Barbie Ferreira now when I look at it even though it’s like an interpretation of it it’s not going to be an exact thing but I definitely can see the 20s inspired same with Yara Shahidi, Serena Williams I don’t know it was just like what is that what is it
Shasha: what did she wear?
Rita: is she channeling the 70s like a big shag carpet around
Shasha: what was she wearing?
Rita: it looks to me like a huge shag carpet sort of shawl, not a shawl maybe a cape I guess with a bodysuit under it you know it’s there
Mirthell: so they’re saying that Kendall Jenner
Shalom: Kendall Jenner
Mirthell: was the best dressed for this year
Sinead: really? what was she wearing?
Shalom: it’s like a nude sort of dress
Mirthell: it was a nude dress it just showed
Rita: where’s the Americana in that?
Shalom: I think it’s just pretty
Mirthell: they have like every year they have like there’s like a slideshow of every year who had it 2019 was Kim Kardashian 2018 was JLo
Sinead: I have a question guys what would you guys have worn to this if you went to the met
gala? how would you have interpreted Americana and what would you have worn
Rita: yeah I like that question
Shiloh: I mean I’m pretty sure Americana is all just star stars and stripes
Rita: oh okay,
Sinead and Rita: so you would’ve worn stars and stripes?
Shiloh: yeah
Rita: Yeah, nobody did that!
Mirthell: yeah but that’s kinda obvious you know.
Shasha: Shiloh, I think you would dress like Grimes, Grime’s dressed like a video character she got a sword and dressed like a video game character
Shiloh: that’s not a video character. Wait it’s
Rita: oh my goodness now that looks like something from Soul Calibur
Shasha: to me she looks like she’s dressed like a video game character and I think you just went there with a video game character like
Mirthell: I had like a tuxedo that had partly Michael Jackson themed like you know like how to cause you to know Michael Jackson is very American so like maybe the top was like a Michael Jackson theme maybe the bottom was like I don’t know another theme or something
Sinead: but that would be very mixed up like one is Michael Jackson themed and then the bottom will be something else
Mirthell: yeah or even have like a michael Jackson inspired tuxedo
Sinead: okay i can see that Shalom what about you?
Shalom: hmm
Sinead: Shiloh stars and stripes Dad is Michael
Jackson themed
Shalom: ah what is American oh Elvis
Sinead: that’s a good one
Shasha: did you just flick your hair back?
Shalom: yeah but in a really feminine way
Sinead: how would you do that with dreads
Shalom: uh like twist it sort of and then like that would be a high top
Sinead: I would be interested to see that but what about the outfit wise like
Shiloh: I say jailhouse rock
Sinead: but what is a classic jailhouse rock outfit?
Shalom: basically like a suit I mean like he has a guitar
Shiloh: no-no like a classic prisoner outfit in the 50s like that bar um that code thing like
Sinead: oh a classic prisoner outfit
Shiloh: yeah that is
Rita: that’s very very American
Mirthell: another American thing is to wear army print as nobody came with any kind of the army you know print or anything like that I think
Shasha: well I have a question for you and Shiloh why are prisoners American?
Shiloh: because that was in jailhouse rock
Rita: no well I’m saying it’s American because we have one of the largest prison-industrial complex systems here in this country that’s why it’s very American.
Shalom: what about you?
Sinead: I’ll be honest I would probably do something fast food-oriented because I
feel like that’s very American! Ronald McDonald
Everyone: yeah [Applause]
Sinead: someone could have done that someone really could have done that.
Rita: That’s true.
Shiloh: okay we could just sound down now
Sinead: okay, Shasha, what would you dress up?
Shasha: maybe a flapper I would say a flapper
Shalom: oh you would look so good in a flapper
Rita: yeah you look cute for me I feel like
Mirthell: I feel like you could wear that like onto my mom
Rita: I would say this is African
Mirthell: yeah but like back in the day you know
Sinead: not really
Rita: no see you’re still trying to channel slavery here
Mirthell: yeah the slavery thing
Rita: no this is not slavery-inspired.
Sinead: that’s more African
Mirthell: okay
Rita: well you know you’re channeling like some Frederick Douglass right now with your hair
Mirthell: but I have to put it to the side like Shasha
Shasha: if you guys can’t see mom is wearing ahead wrap.
Rita: that’s right
Shasha: it’s like a twisted head wrap
Rita: like a turban
Shasha: a turban
Sinead: dad just has his hair all outright like an afro sort of
Rita: well see I guess for me I would probably want to channel like black Americana which would be something like I don’t know I always feel like six days is when I hear when I feel like that was I think some styles that I don’t know that I associate with black Americana or I would say hip-hop very hip-hop a very hip-hop look because I just you know hip-hop started here so
Sinead: that’s true
Rita: what I would do something in that arena now I don’t know if I would come in like baggy jeans or something like that you know but that would be where I would be thinking
Sinead: right right right jeans are very American I’m surprised nobody did like a jean dress
Rita: Yeah that’s true too man we are giving whoever’s gonna be invited next year maybe we will so now we have our ideas but you know if we’re not invited you want you guys are free to take it
Sinead: yeah yeah yeah
Rita: you take these ideas so you guys are prepared for next year
Mirthell: yeah cause remember with jeans like Levi’s and Lee jeans back in the 80s jeans are so American
Rita: I mean back in the 1800s basically jeans.
Sinead: You’re right! Jeans is very American
Mirthell: That’s true
Shiloh: I thought Met Gala is some sort of fashion store
Sinead: it’s no, it’s not a fashion store
Shiloh: oh no yeah
Rita: but yeah
Mirthell: but you know I feel like we were a bit met gala when we did our last family photos when our I think it was a little bit
Sinead: it was couture
Mirthell: I feel like it was couture was like
Shiloh: May I ask is that Shalom’s birthday?
Mirthell: no no no
Rita: The photoshoot
Mirthell: no no I was talking about when we did our photo shoot with our photographer.
Shiloh: oh yeah
Mirthell: you know I think that was a little bit couture I think shalom’s birthday was also a little bit of couture
Sinead: which one? The masquerade?
Mirthell: it’s like the masquerade
Shalom: I love that birthday everyone was dressed for the tea
Rita: yeah well I definitely think that we know how to look at the part you know I think people sometimes overestimate how much it takes to look like that because we pulled that together like that
Shasha: oh yeah
Rita: and I remember I bought my dress and I am not I ashamed I bought it from amazon yes i
did okay and I feel like I could walk that red carpet and nobody would have known no well maybe people
Mirthell: well now they know.
Rita: we’re into it they would have never known it was like you know it was all it was stretchy and there was like fake crystals on it I mean guys if you guys want to do your own met galas at home it’s pretty easy
Sinead: yeah you really could order a ball gown straight from amazon
Rita: you know it just doesn’t take it doesn’t take that much it doesn’t take that much
money and because I mean some of these outfits I’m sorry you cannot tell me they cost like thousands of dollars no-no some of them came in that brown box with prime on it use it I know it did you can order it
Shiloh: you can order a black morph suit on Amazon for like
Sinead: okay yeah you cannot tell me that Kim Kardashian’s outfit did not cost like maybe just a hundred tops
Mirthell: Cause she can.
Rita: if she paid more than like something like that then that would be a problem
[Music]
Sinead: okay guys so what do you think the theme should be not next year but the year after for the met gala
Rita: um I would think that maybe we should do they should do something like an anime theme
Sinead: I would say anime and cartoons so like an animation theme
Rita: right right yeah
Shalom: i love that
Shasha: I think they should do a zombie theme everyone should come there and have tattered dresses
Shalom: a horror theme
Rita: like apocalyptic? yeah man I feel like watching I am a legend now
Sinead: oh first of all they have to have a space theme and people come in different like Metallica
Rita: yeah space, but it kinda becomes boring
Sinead: no imagine people do it some people do galaxy stuff have something to do with stars some people could do metallic because like astronauts rockets like
Shalom: I got one, vehicle
Sinead: what?
Shalom: vehicles like streetwear okay
Sinead: oh but like some people come as like just like the road and
Shalom: yeah just like the roads
Sinead: street lamps
Rita: oh my goodness it’s getting weirder
Mirthell: oh man I’ll tell you I love the way you think Shalom
Shalom: I was looking at that sign across from me and it’s like the Toronto bus and I was like what if I were like that as a bus on me
Rita: I think that now I feel like we’re you’re really thinking outside the box with post-apocalyptic
you know because if this is a costume party let’s go all the way you know but I do think another one really should be like ancient were like what would people wear in ancient times or would it look boring or would people be like
Mirthell: like future like what
Rita: well the future we do all
the time but nobody really does like
Ancient
Sinead: so you when you say ancient do Do you mean like ancient Egypt ancient greek and then people could choose from any ancient
Rita: yeah like that would be beautiful yeah or ancient Egyptian and when I whenever I see Yara Shahidi I don’t know why I always think Egypt when I see her
Sinead: well she isn’t she um she’s partly middle eastern or something Persian?
Rita: well maybe that’s why
Shasha: yeah that’s true we can dress up like as a Roman soldier or as I don’t know an Egyptian
Rita: yeah like you know other things that are just not as common instead of just anime we should just they should do a video game one
Sinead: they should. Shiloh, what would you do if you were invited if there was a video game theme and you were invited?
Shalom: Mario?
Shiloh: no I do like something more complex like maybe like Kratos
Sinead: Kratos that would be an interesting one yeah from the god of war
Shiloh: master chief?
Sinead: master chief where’s master chief from again
Shiloh: halo
Sinead: halo okay okay
Shiloh: what about you?
Sinead: me i would definitely do
Shalom: Rayman Origins
Shiloh: no Shalom first off how would you dress up as Rayman if he has no limbs no legs
Sinead: yeah Rayman Origins has literally no limbs so I don’t know if
Shalom: he wears a Sweater
Shasha: guys I think you should dress up there’s be a theme of dressing up as your favorite person
Sinead: your favorite person?
Rita: oh okay that’s an interesting one
Sinead: that’s a really interesting one
Shasha: If you really love George Washington you dress up like him or if you really love your neighbor
Shiloh: no no
Rita: how about if they go meta and just dress up as the best dress for the met gala
Sinead: I don’t know about that but what if they gave you a guest list right and you it was like secret Santa and you’re like okay this person’s coming to met gala they’re gonna dress as you you’re gonna dress as them who could do it better and dress like each other
Rita: oh that would be so good to mix this thing up because I mean it’s gonna get boring
Mirthell: oh then you have to find yourself
Shalom: find yourself
Mirthell: yeah that’s actually a
good idea
Rita: I like flower themes too
Sinead: That would be an exciting one
Rita: I think they can really make beautiful outfits out of flowers
Mirthell: how about the guys?
Sinead: they can dress as grass or like a watering can you know
Rita: right yeah plant-based yeah they can go the plant-based drought
Shalom: what if you have to dress as one person like this as one
Sinead: oh everybody has the same person?
Mirthell: everybody has one theme we are all one
Shalom: I was thinking more like Eminem’s like slim shady like dresses one thing or one person
Sinead: that’s creepy I mean everybody dressed like Michael Jackson like a bunch of hehe like all around
Rita: it would be different eras of him too
Sinead: that’s so true
Rita: you know people would interpret it Jackson five era thriller area
Shiloh: were children ever like at met gala though?
Shalom: you have to be 18 years or older
Shiloh: wait then why was the baby there
Sinead: why was the baby why?
Shalom: that’s a doll Shiloh
Shiloh: are you for real?
Rita: wait for a minute is that why you said why am I calling him a gremlin you thought I was calling a literal baby a gremlin
Shiloh: yes
Rita: Shiloh I may be outspoken but I am not that outspoken at least not on camera
Shiloh: I mean I mean yeah I mean it’s not on the camera
Sinead: oh my goodness
Rita: but do you guys feel that you guys would actually understand the assignment?
Sinead: yeah i think i would
Shiloh: I don’t think Shasha would
Sinead: I don’t think Shasha would, I think Shasha would be like I don’t care I’m gonna address what I want to do I think
Shiloh: I think shalom would in a weird way.
Shasha: wait, I have a question for the whole entire family who do you think has the best fashion sense?
Shalom and Shiloh: Sinead
Rita: yeah
Shiloh: mom second
Shasha: what do you think dad
Mirthell: I think Sinead, I don’t care like look at me clearly
Shiloh: you’re on your Adidas
Rita: I know I know I was just about to tell you like honey do you have to wear your basketball shorts
Shalom: I think mom is really good at accessorizing herself she knows the right things to put on
Rita: really? so thank you
Sinead: I think that Shasha could if she has she tried but Shasha does not care to try like right now she’s just nicely right but then sometimes I will look at Shasha right and not say she’s bad at dressing but she will literally like wear like some color that does not go with another color like I’m that kind of person where like if that color doesn’t go with it don’t wear it right and it’ll just be so mismatched as she will literally wear stripes and polka dots.
Shalom: okay but she has the best poofy hair
Mirthell: yeah her hair is fierce today.
Shasha: I’ll have the best hair at met gala
Shalom: your hair is super poofy you guys it’s so long and she puts the right products on it Shasha, what are you wearing today?
Shasha: jeans
Shalom: I mean in your hair.
Sinead: in your hair what are you wearing in your hair today?
Shasha: I actually put nothing in it
Mirthell: water
Sinead: wow
Mirthell: she’s wearing water yeah she’s bringing that
Rita: the reason why I asked if you guys would understand the assignment is that I feel like there are moments in time where maybe we don’t fully understand the assignment and we’re not going to the met but maybe like just different things you know what I’m saying like for me yeah I think there was a time where I was so tired and I was so out of it I was at a wedding one of your cousins got married and I remember I went in as it looked like literally, I was going to a funeral I’m not even kidding I don’t even know if you remember what I was wearing but I had on a black plain black skirt black top and a black like a suit
Mirthell: yeah but you know what you’re just trying to be Kim Kardashian that’s all wow no-no but you know what
Rita: and then my hair was just back in a bun I looked like I don’t know I just looked like i
was mourning I think and I wasn’t though and
Mirthell: I think that a lot of women wear black because black is like
Rita: but I didn’t even wear it like oh this is going to look nice this was that I must have either I was pregnant or I just had a baby so everything didn’t even fit well it was just huge and everything was just huge and my I had flats on it was just like there were zero styles and I remember another one of your relatives came out and she was decked out I mean she looked like she was at the met gala and then one of those nice dresses and I started to look at all the women there and I’m like
Mirthell: oh no
Rita: have I not been to a wedding in a long time?
Sinead: oh no
Rita: Why do I look like that and I saw her she looked at me and she just kind of looked me up and down like oh nice to see you
Sinead and Mirthell: oh no
Rita: no because honestly when you don’t understand the assignment like that people think something’s wrong with you she probably thought
Sinead: Do you think people walked through met gala around like what are you doing?
Rita: oh yeah yeah well I feel like it’s met gala I think all those people are so artistic they all think yeah you look good but I feel like at a wedding where there’s like you know just regular people I really feel that they were looking at me like
Shasha: judging you?
Rita: yeah they’re just like
man is something wrong with her she must
be like
Mirthell: Is she okay?
Rita: Is she depressed and then I was sitting in the lobby by myself too because I was exhausted maybe one of y’all were crying and I was just like oh get me out of here so maybe I subconsciously dressed like the way I was feeling inside
Mirthell: like a shadow on the wall yeah
Rita: yeah even your mom was decked out and I was I mean
Shalom: well I think that dressing is definitely related to your mood right now whether it’s laziness or whether it’s depression or whether you just feel like you know you feel good about yourself it definitely reveals what you’re feeling on the inside
Rita: yeah one time we had like spirit week at school we had to wear the colors of our I think of our class or school I can’t remember if we what which one it was but I think it was the colors of our class or something and so everybody came extremely creative me and my crazy self I just thought oh I know what I’ll do and this is one time where you don’t even have to wear the uniform you know you get to actually go out buy clothes and look cute.
Sinead: what did you do?
Rita: what I did was I still wore one of my polos that was a uniform top and I wore like white regular looking pants or something and then I tied like a blue sweater around my waist it was the wackest everybody else they went all out it was so bad, I remember walking by this group of friends you know how black guys are these group of guys and looked they just took one look at me and started laughing and I was you know right up until that moment I didn’t even think it was bad because I was like look at me I understand the assignment until they saw me and started laughing I was just like oh snap does this not and then I started looking at everybody I feel like this moment keeps on happening to me I don’t get what’s going on until someone else you know like looks at me and I’m just like oh I thought I understood but I guess I didn’t well I don’t know
Mirthell: I don’t know man I guess if there was an invitation for the onyx family it was just revoked I was like
Rita: honestly, guys but you guys feel though that you guys always understand the assignment where you go honestly
Shiloh: uh I think it was me in like pre-2020 that I didn’t understand any assignment at all I had a very bad fashion sense back then
Sinead: well, you were young
Shalom: I think you stepped up though Shiloh I feel like now, you’re taking care of your shoe game your hair
Mirthell: yeah Shiloh used to like knock here and I think that was indicative of your age like all of a sudden, I think you turned like maybe thirteen or possibly even fourteen but thirteen maybe sometimes thirteen started actually caring.
Shiloh: it was like the middle of being thirteen yeah yeah so I have way better clothes now
Sinead: I think the only time I did not understand the assignment was not knowing I did not have to wear heels to a party that was like the
Rita: oh
Sinead: so basically you all remember this story where you know, it was we were in Martha’s vineyard right we got invited to go to a jack and jill white party a very exclusive party and I was like wow this is you know my first time going to such a party like this clearly you have to wear heels so party like this right?
Rita: oh yeah yeah we were super proud of you
Mirthell: all the girls were wearing sneakers and stuff
Sinead: yeah I show up everybody’s wearing sneakers I’m like wait a minute I’m literally the only one in heels, literally the only one in heels, and then you know I got, what I got because I tripped over myself with food in my hand
Mirthell: yeah but here’s the thing like the big thing was and I think I interrupted the big announcement but Sasha Obama was right beside you
Sinead: That’s what I’m saying it’s like that’s right that’s what makes it even doubly embarrassing like how do you just you’re going to first-party.
Shasha: Did she see you though?
Sinead: maybe
Mirthell: no no no no no no
Rita: no you told me she saw you she looked straight right after you tripped
Mirthell: so in this story they’re beside Sasha Obama they’re texting us saying yeah daddy
Obama’s literally right beside me and it’s just like her bodyguard was on the other side of her she was here and she had her little crew and then you got all these black young folks like you do not want to trip around black people
Sinead: You do not understand how embarrassed like I had grass stains on my pants
Rita: because she was in all-white
Mirthell: she was in all-white
Sinead: it was a white party so I had grass stains because I fell forward I had food in my hand so food was flying like you don’t understand how you gonna do that in front and at this moment Obama was still present so she was fully present at that moment like after her
Shiloh: she probably went home and told her dad about it
Rita: I know and then there was this girl she just tripped right in front
Mirthell: and you know why? Because she was wearing heels.
Rita: but you told me Sinead that someone at the party said “see that’s why you don’t wear heels”
Sinead: yes and i was like HA HA HA
Rita: yeah they didn’t care they were just like
Mirthell: they’re just like what you doing yeah
Rita: I mean but this is the thing that was definitely a good example of not understanding the assignment.
Sinead: I know that next year we went again I did not wear heels yeah
Mirthell: but that was our first time at that party because that’s when we just started to go to Martha’s unit around that time and so that was like you guys first white party so you weren’t sure exactly all you knew was like where why you
Sinead: Do you understand the assignment
Mirthell: right right
Rita: right but now why did you trip was it because you were in the grass?
Sinead: yes
Rita: It was the grass right?
Sinead: yes
Rita: yeah
Shiloh: Why would you wear heels on grass?
Sinead: Shiloh
Mirthell: we didn’t even know what was gonna be outside we didn’t know what was gonna be indoor or outside
Shiloh: can you just go home and then just change?
Sinead: first of all I would even say this my outfit was wack too I was wearing some kind of white poncho and the white t-shirt
Rita: you guys got to be the judge you guys got to see we’re going to put up the picture we’re going to put up the picture
Mirthell: did Sinead know the assignment?
Rita: Did she understands the assignment
Sinead: listen in my defense because we were invited that year we didn’t have time to prepare ahead we actually had to buy things on the island so we just had to figure out how things work
Mirthell: that’s true that’s true
Rita: yeah do you guys
Mirthell: I don’t even know if we had a picture for that year, coz we have the picture for the next year the following year
Rita: Do you guys can understand
Sinead: no, i have a picture of me and shalom
Mirthell: That year? oh okay
Rita: yeah because you were on the stairs
Sinead: yes
Rita: I remember that now I just have to say like Sinead was saying at the last minute we decided to go to this party we didn’t really bring all-white thing so we go on the island on the island
Mirthell: That has no clothes stores
Rita: I don’t even understand there is no shopping on the market
Mirthell: there’s like a lot of like
Rita: I was in vineyard vines okay right like but that’s like for older people
Mirthell: yeah old white golfing
Sinead: that’s what I’m saying I came showing up in clothes that I would wear when I was when I turned 50 I’ll wear it you know
Rita: it’s true oh my goodness but at our party that we went to that wasn’t all white though
Sinead: No we could wear anything
Mirthell: No it was like adults we could pretty much wear everything
Rita: yeah but even there it just kind of felt like
Sinead: yeah did you guys were you guys dressed the tea there was or do you feel like you were out of place when you guys went to that party on Martha’s vineyard
Mirthell: I think we dressed a lot like everybody else.
Rita: I feel like because it’s adults we tend to be mish-mashed right you know I saw people who were old who look like they were going to church and then I saw people who were in jeans and I saw everything in between you know
Mirthell: it wasn’t like you guys where everybody was like everybody wears white and you know
Rita: in my opinion, though this era right now we don’t even have a defined style, in my opinion, I feel like it’s a mishmash
Sinead: yeah, I feel like it’s from the 90s 80s 2000s new things now like things are just being brought back right
Rita: and I feel like everything is understanding the assignment
Shiloh: what about the converse?
Rita: I just bought a bunch of Converse you know
Shiloh: wait for yourself? or for everyone
Sinead: For herself
Rita: that would sound better
Shiloh: i want some
Rita: if you want me to get you a converse I can
Shiloh: I never asked for shoes I expected you to surprise me like that
Rita: okay well
Shalom: you are old enough to order shoes by yourself
Rita: Merry Christmas!
Sinead: yeah
Mirthell: yeah that’s your Christmas gift shoes
Rita: converse you made it easy for me thanks
Mirthell: thank you
Shasha: what about books?
Rita: oh
Mirthell: That is our theme this year
Rita: yeah
Shiloh: So lame.
[Music]
Mirthell: anyhow guys it was great having this talk about fashion
Sinead: understanding the assignment
Mirthell: and understanding the assignment
Rita: yes yes yes well you know Frederick Douglass closed it out for us thank you guys so much you know Frederick Douglass was a very respected man, you should feel like
Mirthell: exactly I feel like
Rita: yeah why are you laughing over here
Mirthell: yeah I feel very very
Rita: wow Mirthell that’s not nice okay anyway
Mirthell: sorry Fred
Rita: all right guys thanks for joining us let us know which outfits at the met gala did you guys really like did Sinead understand her assignment and also give us some feedback on some other things that you guys want to know and hear our opinions on what you guys want to talk about all right and we’ll see you next time bye.
Everyone: bye
